RT 480W: Evidence-Based Practice and Trends in Recreational Therapy

This course was a writing intensive course which outlined the writing styles,  trends, and evidence based practices within recreational therapy. We learned how to appraise, evaluate, interpret and apply research to support growing issues/trends. Throughout this course, I practiced writing a conference session proposal, several writing exercises, case study and a final literature review. I enhanced skills on creativity, research methods, apply/appraisal and developing a PICOT question. Overall, I learned how to shift my perspective and write in the lens of a practitioner/researcher.

In terms of writing and the advancement of the field, I learned how important it is to continue to build upon my knowledge and pour into the field. I strive to make an impact. The importance of contributing to further research was a key take away from this course. There is limited evidence based practice in the field and I want to be a part of the change. I see professional writing as a beacon for education and advocacy. As far as education, It helps our clients, practitioners, students and the field as a whole continue to grow and develop. For advocacy, it is a catalyst for change and new ideas.

Overall, my competence for professional and academic writing has grown exponentially. I have vast improvements on identifying RT issues, applying relevant research, and demonstrating overall professionalism in my writing. This course has specifically prepared me for contributing to the field by breaking down the process and the  purpose of research. As a result of this course, I am well prepared to be a writer for a publication in the future.
