Applied Work-Based Learning
RT 468: Senior Internship
My internship at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in the behavioral health unit was a very valuable experience for me as a Recreational Therapy student. It gave me the opportunity to apply what I learned in class to a real healthcare setting while working directly with patients. Being in a hands-on environment helped me better understand the importance of recreational therapy and how it can positively impact a person’s mental and emotional well-being.
Throughout my internship, I helped plan and lead therapeutic activities for patients in the behavioral health unit. These activities were designed to encourage social interaction, reduce stress, and support healthy coping skills. I worked with patients during group sessions and learned how to adapt activities based on different needs, personalities, and participation levels. This experience helped me become more confident in communicating with patients and leading activities in a professional setting.
One of the most important parts of my internship was working alongside recreational therapists and other healthcare professionals. I learned how teamwork and communication are essential in providing quality patient care. Observing the treatment team and seeing how each staff member contributed to patient recovery gave me a greater understanding of the healthcare field and the role of recreational therapy within behavioral health services.
Overall, my internship at Sentara Norfolk General helped me grow both personally and professionally. The hands-on, work-based experience allowed me to develop important skills that will prepare me for my future career. It also strengthened my passion for helping others and confirmed that recreational therapy is the right career path for me.
